Refused CPR - Study 3/13/13

Refused CPR

Sin has separated humans from our relationship with God our creator. When Adam and Eve sinned (disobeyed God and fell out of their original relationship with God), the punishment for sin was declared and went into effect. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” Genesis 2: 16-17. Spiritually speaking, humans are dead living corpses. A dead person will either remain dead or a new breath is breathed into the person to live again.

About two weeks ago in California, a nurse refused to perform CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) on a dying elderly woman and she never regained consciousness and died. The nurse had called emergency services (911) for help and the 911 dispatcher instructed and begged the nurse to perform CPR before help got there. The nurse refused to perform CPR citing that it was against the policy of her employment at the independent living facility. The nation cried foul and many were outraged though the nurse acted within rules.

In John 3, Jesus said to Nicodemus, “You must be born again (from above)”. Jesus is saying to Nicodemus, I am not like the nurse. You are already dead and condemned but I can give you and any person new life (CPR- Christ’s Paid Reborn) if you believe in Me. Nicodemus, I know what the law says and I gave the law but I am offering you something better - grace and love. Do you want it; then believe in Me and have “everlasting life”. Can you see the loving heart of God for Nicodemus and for us? 16” For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” vs.16. Grace (“God’s undeserved resources”) is not just some principle we must apply but rather it is imparted to us by God. 16 “And[e] of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (John1:16-17). Do you want the law/rules or God’s grace applied to you? You cannot meet the requirements of the law in your “doings”. Grace is received by believing and by faith and trust in God.

John 3
There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?”

10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? 11 Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.[a] 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but[b] have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”

Jesus was lifted up and died at the Cross just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness for the healing of the Israelites after they had sinned. The complete requirement for the abolishment and forgiveness for our sin has been fulfilled by Jesus. To receive the benefit, we must believe and trust in God for this Truth. Do you believe to end your separation from God so that your relationship will be restored with God your Father and Creator?

If you have not believed in Jesus, then you have refused to receive the CPR of Jesus. In essence, “he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God”. Is this the state (being dead in sin) you want to be and remain? God never sends anyone to hell, people send themselves to hell by not believing and accepting the forgiveness of sin accomplished in the death and resurrection of Christ. Believe in Christ today because tomorrow may be too late? Today is the “Day of Salvation”. You can come by night like Nicodemus; in your own privacy and one on one with Jesus even right now. Lord, come into my heart!

If we already believe in Jesus, are we acting like the nurse who refused to give CPR, in this case introduce people to Jesus who can give them new life? It is easy to blame the nurse and refuse to see our own callousness and attitude to those dying/already dead in sin. Lord, touch my heart to do and tell this great gospel news to my neighbor. Empower me by your Spirit to be your witness. May it never be business as usual for me. Amen. Tell someone today about Jesus. Thank you.
