Don't Be A Diotrephes

Dear Saints: Be careful what you name your children. Diotrephes means “nourished by Jupiter”.  He lived out his name. Instead of being inspired by the Holy Spirit, Diotrephes seem to be inspired by the god of Jupiter, a Greek god. In our last study we met Gaius, whom Apostle John commended for his faith, love for the truth, love for the church and prospering in the things of God. Gaius excelled in hospitality and helped to advance the spread of the Gospel (3 John 1:1-8).  I want to be a Gaius. He is quite different from Diotrephes. Please don’t be a Diotrephes or manifest his spirit. Diotrephes is said to love being “preeminence” among others things. He loves to be first in everything. Do you know of anyone like that? I know you have someone in mind. But we are all potential candidates for seeking preeminence and pushing others aside.   Let’s read more about Diotrephes 3 John 1: 9-10: “I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among t...

Are You Prospering And Do You Want To?

Dear Saints: As we continue our study of 3 John, we are confronted with one of the words of the Bible that has generated so much interest, confusion and heresies. That word is “prosperity” or to “prosper.” In its basic form, it means to “go well” as in a journey. It has been elevated to having material wealth. Some in the church have added good health to material wealth to equate to prosperity based on 3 John 2. They have made a strong following that says and believe that if you are a Christian, you must have wealth and good health otherwise you are not exercising your faith; and “sowing enough seeds” and naming and claiming prosperity. This, in a nutshell is the prosperity gospel from the pit of hell. But is it true? It is true that God wants a general welfare for us as His children but financial success is not an entitlement and a guarantee. God provides for the needs of His children. Prosperity gospel is covetousness which is  idolatry  of a small god (Colossians 3:5...

One On One With God - Happy Thanksgiving!

Dear Saints: One on One with God! Have you ever engaged in any one on one sports like tennis? You can’t run and you can’t hide. Just the two of you on the court. At the end of the day, God our Father and Creator plays a one on one with us from beginning to the end of  life here on earth and also life forever. God is a personal private God who knows us by name. Yes, God knows where you are right now and what you are going through. This is very comforting and very hopeful. Please be at rest and peace. Amen! Today, we start a new study and the third Epistle of John. It’s a private personal letter written by Apostle John to a guy named Gaius. What would a personal letter from God to you and me look like? What would be the issues of primary concern that God will write about? How would you respond to God’s private letter to you? Also what if God’s private letter to you is made public for everyone to read? Let’s just get a peek into God’s one on one with Gaius.  We will get in...
