Mocked By Your Brothers in Your House - Study 4/23/13

Mocked By Your Brothers in Your House

The worst heart pains are inflicted at home and in your own household. We are more forgiving of outsiders than those within. Why is it so? We often think and conclude that those within should know better. It is played out thousands of times in the marriage relationship and that is one of the reasons the divorce rate is so high even among those who profess to be Christians. We often say the marriage is broken because the heart is broken.

We have a Jesus whose heart was broken at home before he could even minister outside. His own brothers mocked him and did not believe in him. Apostle John records, 3 His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing. 4 For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5 For even His brothers did not believe in Him”. John 7: 3-5.

Did you hear what they said to Jesus? You think you are a “big shot” and you think you are “God”, go outside and prove yourself and see how bad you will fail. This is mocking in the highest degree. Have you been so badly mocked and ridiculed at home before and/or even now? Jesus has been there that is why the Scriptures says, “He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.4 Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. Isaiah 53:3-5.

Let’s take heart. You and I were his brothers and sisters that mocked Jesus before we believed in Him. If you are yet to believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died to take away your sins, then you are still mocking Jesus. Please stop mocking Jesus. He is God almighty.

John 7: 1-13

After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for He did not want to walk in Judea, because the Jews[a] sought to kill Him. 2 Now the Jews’ Feast of Tabernacles was at hand. 3 His brothers therefore said to Him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that Your disciples also may see the works that You are doing. 4 For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5 For even His brothers did not believe in Him.

6 Then Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to this feast. I am not yet[b] going up to this feast, for My time has not yet fully come.” 9 When He had said these things to them, He remained in Galilee.

10 But when His brothers had gone up, then He also went up to the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. 11 Then the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, “Where is He?” 12 And there was much complaining among the people concerning Him. Some said, “He is good”; others said, “No, on the contrary, He deceives the people.” 13 However, no one spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews.

The Feast of Tabernacle is one of the most joyous of the feast of the Jews. Other feasts were more solemn. They are to rejoice greatly at this feast (Leviticus 23:34-36). Jesus’s fleshly half-brothers did not want him to rejoice. Some of the mocking we receive at home or inflict on others sap joy and rejoicing out of one another’s hearts. Let’s be careful how we treat those in our household and in marriage especially. Don’t aid Satan who comes to “steal”.

Nothing however should stop us from doing the will of God just as Jesus did. Not even the worst mocking regardless of who it is coming from. Jesus did go to the feast but at His own time and God the Father’s time. Jesus told his brothers, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil”. Also see how Jesus answered his brothers. Not fire for fire.

The question then is who are Jesus’ real brothers and sisters? 21 “But He answered and said to them, “My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.” Luke 8:21. Jesus goes on to say also, 26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple Luke 14:26-27. Jesus is calling us for radical and total devotion to Him that is beyond love of family and even ourselves. It is all of Jesus in me or nothing.

That is why Paul could say, 20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.” Galatians 2:20-21.

Don’t feel sorry for yourself, just follow Jesus and share also in His suffering and His Resurrection which has given us life everlasting. Do you believe in Jesus? Then let’s follow Him and not the pastor or anyone else. A “Disciple” is a follower of Jesus. Remember there is always a cross to bear and that is why we must forgive one another as Jesus has forgiven us.

Lord Jesus, help me to believe in you and to follow you all of my life regardless of life’s challenges. Amen.

Forgive someone today in your house and family. They may not be there tomorrow.
