Take Your Helmet of Salvation - Happy Resurrection Sunday

Take Your Helmet of Salvation.

I had a recent conversation with a car dealer’s shuttle driver who gave me ride while my car was being fixed. The gentleman said that whenever one of his relatives dies and it rains during the funeral, that he is assured that the relative is heading to heaven. Woo! What an assurance of salvation. I asked him where hardened criminals go to when it rains during their funeral. He had no answer. Salvation is only in Jesus and there is no other way. I told him to stick with the Word of God for assurance of salvation for him or for any other.

In our study today, we must put on one of the whole armor of God – the helmet of salvation. Unlike the shuttle driver, we must understand what salvation is, whether we have been saved and what we have been saved from and for. The purpose of this is to stand against Satan and his host of demons in our daily spiritual battle. Let’s hear Apostle Paul on our marching orders:

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age,[c] against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

In addition to the other armors, we are to take on the helmet of salvation. The word salvation can also be rendered deliverance. We are saved or delivered but from what? Apostle Paul in the same letter says (Ephesians 2:1-6):

“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus”.

We have been saved from the “wrath” of God - a due punishment for our sins. This is only by God’s love, mercy and grace. "With His stripes we are healed And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all." (Isaiah 53:5). We have been set free from sin and its death.

We have also been saved for this purpose: 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

“12” Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure” (Philippians 2;12-13). We are to work out what God has worked inside of us. The good and great news is the God is enabling us “”both to will and to do His good pleasure”. We must show fruit of salvation by God’s grace.

Satan wants to convince us that God did not mean to save us and to take for granted the great salvation we have received. But “how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation” Hebrews 2:3. There is no other plan. Good works will not save you. We are saved for good works not by it.

The helmet symbol is a protection for our minds and also has the badge of Christ on it signifying whom we belong to. We must therefore continually remind ourselves and renew our mind (Romans 12:1-2) about our sure salvation which happened:

“13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who[b] is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” Ephesians 1:13. Our salvation is guaranteed. We must believe and trust in Jesus Christ as evidenced by the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Are you saved? “16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ,[a] for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek (Romans 1:16. There is no other way to escape the wrath of God for our sins except through Jesus. Church attendance does not mean we are saved. Be warned. Many in the church are not yet saved. Let’s pray for them and welcome them to Christ especially this coming Resurrection Sunday.

Our salvation is more than just going to heaven. We have been saved and we are being saved and sanctified for the ultimate day of salvation. The plan of redemption which includes salvation of man also includes all of God’s creation. Everything will be restored to the intent and purposes of God. “21 Because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God” Romans 8:21. Our gospel is the gospel of restoration including even our society.

We must wear daily our helmet of salvation to defeat the enemy. It is also called helmet of the hope of salvation. “But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation”. We cannot live without the hope of salvation when everything would be made perfect and complete in God. Are you sick today or troubled for any reason. Rejoice in the hope of our salvation. Let’s share this hope with others. People are dying from hopelessness.

Let’s rejoice greatly this Easter and sing praises to our God. We are celebrating the death, burial and resurrection of our great Savior Jesus Christ. He has secured our salvation forever. Hallelujah. He is alive indeed. Hallelujah! We have been made alive in Christ who lives forever. Amen

Happy Resurrection Sunday
