But Who Do You Say I am?
But Who Do You Say I am?
The world has many impressions of Jesus. We have many ideas of who Jesus is. But Jesus will ask us today who we think and believe he is. It is the biggest deal- who you say Jesus is to you.
The revelation of Jesus you have is a matter of life and death. The disciples conducted a quick sample of the people. Some said he is Elijah, John the Baptist, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.
Today people say Jesus was a good teacher and a good person; and that is all they can tolerate. Some like the Jehovah Witnesses (JW) say Jesus is Michael the archangel, thus He is not God and he is a created being. The JW do not believe in the trinity.
The Mormons say Jesus is a created being who was filled with the power of God; meaning he is just like any of us humans but he is not God nor recognize Jesus as the “eternal” son of God. For them Jesus is at the same level and equal to Joseph Smith, the propaganda of their cult. That is why the babblings of Joseph Smith (the Book of Mormons) is scripture to them and they are the Latter Day Saints who will reign just like Jesus. If He is not God, how can he save you? Only God saves people from himself - from the wrath of sin.
But who do you say Jesus is? Peter answered rightly. ““You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Good answer Peter! But however did you Peter get it right? Jesus explained the source. “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven”. Only God, by the means of His Holy Spirit can reveal to you who Jesus is as the Christ (Greek), the Messiah (Hebrew).
Do you today know Jesus as the Messiah, the Christ? I am not asking whether you go to Church or wear the cross on your neck, or use the word Jesus in every sentence of yours. Christ/Messiah means the “Anointed One”. Anointed for what? Listen to Jesus in Luke 4:18 and also Isaiah 61:1:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me, To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,[j]
To proclaim liberty to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”[k]
Is Luke 4:18 the revelation of Jesus you have and believe? Have you believed the gospel, been healed from broken heart, freed from the chains of sin, now have opened eyes to see God, freed from oppression from the evil one, and have been accepted by the Lord as His adopted child?
No other concept or imagination or understanding of Jesus will suffice. That is why Jesus is the only way, the only truth and the only life giver we must have. Yes, call me narrow minded and yes I am when it comes to who Jesus is.
Jesus is also “the Son of the living God”. The Jewish culture then understood what this meant. It is equivalent of saying Jesus is God. The Father and the Son are one. That is why Jesus said, 7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him… He who has seen Me has seen the Father” John 14:7and 9.
Is this the revelation of Jesus you have? If you do, “the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it (the Church)” and you from seeing the face of God our Father.
This is why we must pray for everyone for God to reveal Himself to them as we tell them of the good news of Jesus, the anointed savior, deliverer and reconciler of man/woman to a loving God. Have you been reconciled to God?
Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ (Matthew 16):
13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”
14 So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed[d] in heaven.”
20 Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.
Still, who do you say Jesus is? Ask the Father to reveal Jesus Christ to you. Amen.
