The Resurrection and Stephen Hawking's Death
The Resurrection and Stephen Hawking’s Death
Why would the Sadducees who don’t believe in the resurrection ask Jesus about marriage in the resurrection? Because they are “sad you see." Yesterday it was reported that one of the smartest people living has died. He was Stephen Hawking, the physicist. We thank God for his contribution to advancement of science. This is what Hawking said about God.
“Before we understand science, it is natural to believe that God created the universe. But now science offers a more convincing explanation,” he said. “What I meant by ‘we would know the mind of God’ is, we would know everything that God would know, if there were a God, which there isn’t. I’m an atheist.”
Hawking further said,
“God is the name people give to the reason we are here,” he said. “But I think that reason is the laws of physics rather than someone with whom one can have a personal relationship. An impersonal God.”
On heaven, Hawking said, “I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail,” he told the Guardian. “There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.”
Unless Hawking had repented and turned to Christ before he died, the Bible has the following to say. “The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, They have done abominable works, There is none who does good.” (Psalm 14:1).
We pray that God will comfort Hawking’s family and that any that does not know God and trust in Christ’s redemption on the cross will come to that point. Jesus died on the cross for all including atheists.
Everyone living and dies must rise again from the dead. Resurrection is not just for believers in Christ. All will rise to damnation to hell for everlasting torture or to be with God for everlasting blissful life.
Back to our lesson. Would there be marriage in heaven? Yes and no. There would not be marriage as we known it now but believers are said to be looking forward to the marriage of Christ and his bride the church.
Jesus gives us a sneak preview of what we will be. “ 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God[b] in heaven. Matthew 22:30. Let’s have the best marriage on this side of eternity. Let’s love our spouses with the love Christ has given us and let’s always forgive one another as we have been forgiven.
The problem of the Sadducees is the same problem we have today. People are not reading their Bibles, and do not understand it. Jesus said, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. Vs 29. When you don’t read and study the Scriptures, you will not have knowledge of God. Faith comes by hearing the word of God. With faith in God then and only then can we know the power of God and expect His power to work in our lives and the lives of others.
Apostle Paul prayed for the Ephesians and for us. “That you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.” Ephesians 1:18-21.
Do you know God? Do you know the power of God? Many today have the form of godliness but deny the power thereof. They dismiss the supernatural and the present day miracles of God. The same power that raised Christ from the dead, that is God the Holy Spirit lives in us. He is in us to raise dead people to life through us. Everyone who does not know and trust in Christ is “dead in sin and trespasses” and must be made alive by the power of the Gospel.
Will you speak to someone about Christ this Easter season and give them opportunity to be made alive? Let’s be intentional about making disciples for Christ. Make a list or just go on the street and speak to people. We have the power of the Holy Spirit to do so. Pray for people around you that the Holy Spirit will open blinded eyes that they will see Christ. Amen.
Our God is the God of the living and not the dead. Jesus is alive and because of Him, we shall live forever with our God.
Matthew 22:23-33. The Sadducees: What About the Resurrection?
23 The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, 24 saying: “Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. 25 Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother. 26 Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh. 27 Last of all the woman died also. 28 Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.”
29 Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God[b] in heaven. 31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?[c] God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching.
