Knowing The One True God = Eternal Life

Dear Saints:

The more I listen to the news especially on the corona virus, the more I think of death and dying. I am sure I am not the only one. Everyone has the fear of dying otherwise we won't run from a burning house. People are dying and babies are equally being born (about 1.8 deaths vs. 4.2 babies born per second worldwide). I should watch less news and more living in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Good news! Jesus came and gave us eternal life, forever living and not dying. You may say what about those followers of Christ who are dying?

Well, let's look at what Jesus defines as "ETERNAL LIFE". What is eternal life?

Please hear Jesus’ answer as we continue our study of John 17 (please read the entire chapter). Apostle John lets us in on Jesus’ prayer to God the Father:

“Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, 2 as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him.

3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. 4 I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.” John 17:1-5.

Eternal life is therefore here and for now. It's not going to heaven though that's where we will eventually live.

Eternal life is knowing the one true God and Jesus Christ. That's it? Yes that's it and that's why Jesus left heaven to show us and give us (that is those who believe and have trusted in Him).

What a relief! So do you have eternal life? Do you know the one true God? There are many gods and they have been around for ages. Jesus does not use words carelessly. He specifically intended the words, "the one true God," or “the only true God”.

Everyone living has some god(s) they worship or obey – the god of materialism and god of lust are the popular ones ruling today. Which God is yours and mine? I hope and trust the one true God.

Notice that only Jesus gives eternal life so it is not a book knowledge He is talking about. It must be supernatural revelation by the Holy Spirit of the one true God; otherwise, you wouldn't know Him if you claimed to have received Him.

The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we know the one true God (Romans 8:16). You can't fake it and we continue to know and experience Him daily and forever. The Holy Spirit makes this possible as our Helper to intimately know the true God on on-going basis in fellowship and adoration.

In all of these, Jesus also establishes His deity in the triune Godhead - God the Father, God the Son and God for the Holy Spirit. Did you see, “Now, O Father, glorify Me together ]with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was?” Jesus did not just all of sudden show up on earth. He is God that has ever existed before the world began. He created the world. That is why He is the only true God that can save us. Thank you Lord!

So what is this to us in the midst of corona virus, school closings and the stock market crashes? If you have eternal life, you don't have to be afraid of dying because you know the One true God. Our goal like that of Jesus is to allow our lives to glorify God in all we do and say.

As such, we go about our day like those who know the one true God because as we learn next week, Jesus prayed for us and continues to pray for us even right now. We commune with God continuously everyday – that is eternal life.

Yes, we must be cautious and follow the CDC guidelines on the prevention and spread of the virus but we must never live in fear. I love what the book of Hebrews 2:14-15, said about Jesus:

“14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he [Jesus Christ] too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.” I thank God we have been freed from the slavery/bondage of the fear of death.

What about those around us who do not know the one true God or even mistakenly think they do? We are obligated to introduce them to the one true God as if we are pleading on behalf of God. (See 2 Corinthians 5:18-21).

Can you answer for sure that you have eternal life? Then let's live as those who know the one true God and love Him and love others as He has commanded. If you are not sure of having eternal life, go ahead right now and call on Jesus to reveal Himself to you and fill you with His Holy Spirit. Amen.

““The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 The Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; 26 The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.” Amen. Numbers 16: 24-26.
