The Day of The Lord - Judgment & Righteousness
Dear Saints,
There are the last days; there is also the day of the Lord—two different things and events. One is a period, and the other is a fixed day/date.
Jesus spoke about both while answering the disciples' questions in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 7. Please read and study these words of Jesus in addition to the book of Revelation regarding the end times and the day of the Lord.
As we continue our study of 2 Peter, let us hear the apostle Peter speak about the day of the Lord, which is the day of Judgment on the earth:
"But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve Judgment.
11 Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live, 12 looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along. On that day, he will set the heavens on fire, and the elements will melt away in the flames. 13 But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world filled with God's righteousness.
14 And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight." 2 Peter 3:10-14.
Yes, judgment is coming after God's patience comes to an end. We learned already that God is patiently waiting to give everyone a chance to repent and return to Him.
Again, Peter is echoing Jesus, saying the day of the Lord will be sudden, unannounced, and like a thief in the night. No one will blame God because there will be no reason to do so.
God's grace and patience have filled the earth, and people breathe it daily. He has provided His only Son, who died for our sins. Now the Son is coming again to rule and judge the earth and its people.
How can we escape if we neglect such a great salvation in Christ? – Hebrews 2:3-4. The answer is no. There is no other way and life except in Christ. Today is the day of Salvation and not tomorrow. Let's turn to God today.
We must each answer one question posed by today's Scripture: "Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you [we] should live?"
Whatever we are acquiring and accumulating will be destroyed. So why are we killing ourselves to do it? We lie and cheat to obtain that which will rot or burn up by fire? Instead, we are called to "holy and godly" living - a life set apart for the glory of God. How do we do that? The power of the Holy Spirit has been given to us to live godly in Christ Jesus. Let us cry out to our God and Father to stir our hearts to holy living.
Lord, please forgive me for all my intentional and unknown sins. Please cleanse me from every unrighteousness and grant me sufficient grace to love and obey you because of your great love for me. Lord, I need you more than ever in these last days and as the day of the Lord approaches. Thank you for forgiving my sins forever.
Please, Lord, help me to tell all within my sphere of influence about your great love in Christ and the coming Judgment. Thank you for your presence in my life. I believe and stand on your promise that you will never leave or forsake me now and forever because I have trusted you. Amen
Friends, it's all going up in flames. Let us live for God and not for things, seeking His kingdom and righteousness first. Amen.
If you have not known Jesus as Lord and Savior, this is your invitation to do so now and not tomorrow. Confess your sins, repent, and ask Jesus to forgive and grant you His Holy Spirit. Amen. Welcome to God's kingdom and feed on His word to grow.
The Day of the Lord, the day of Judgment, is coming for the unbelievers in Christ. Be ready in Christ. It also ushers Christ's followers into the new heaven and a new earth where righteousness dwells forever.
