Welcome The Son of God - 12/4/13
Welcome The Son of God
May I shock you to say that it is not “Christmas” season. Why? Because Christmas season has become associated with the worst in all of us - greed, hoarding, ingratitude, unforgiveness, drunkenness, fake smiles, pleasing people unnecessarily and being irresponsible in spending money we do not have and accumulating debt, family in-fighting, store fights (like this past Black Friday) and the list goes on.
Well it is not just during the Christmas season but all year round and all of our lives that brings out the worst in all of us. Sin is our nature and it is not necessarily what we do. We need a Savior and we need tomake peace with God. It is for these and other “worst” sins that the “Son of God” was given. Let’s go back to the beginning of this season as pre-ordained and announced by God. The Son of God who takes away the sins of the whole world has come. That is the joy of this season and not the new gadgets and clothes we give and receive.
Do you have the Son of God in your heart? Are you giving the Son of God to people this season by praying and sharing the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection for the forgiveness of all of our sins? This is the gift that keeps on giving and not the stupid toys we give one another. Let us rejoice, the Son of God is here.
Luke 1:26-38
“26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”[c]
29 But when she saw him,[d] she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing will be impossible.”
38 Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Like Mary, we are told to “Rejoice”. We also must believe and receive the Son of God. The virgin birth is impossible to believe on our own human intelligence. But “with God nothing will be impossible.”
Do you have the “worst” of sinners in your family, among your friends, school, coworkers, and neighborhood? With God all things are possible for this person, for you and for me. Like Mary, let us pray and believe for us and others, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you”.
Rejoice for the sinless “Son of God” that was conceived by the Holy Spirit. If you do not believe in the virgin birth, then there is no Jesus and no hope for you. The only One who can be a true sacrifice for our sins is the one who is sinless – the Son of God, conceived by the Holy Spirit.
Like Mary, we have been “highly favored” to receive the Son of God. Lord, overshadow us so that we may believe the impossible for you make all things possible. Amen.
Like Mary, may we say, “Let it be to me according to your word.”
Let us rejoice and sing “Joy to the World the Lord has come. Let the earth receive her King. Let every heart prepare Him room”.
