Be A Good Neighbor Meet my good neighbors Jerry and Debbie. It had rained the previous night and the water from our roof was splashing and pouring over our walls instead of draining out through the gutter. I needed to climb the roof to remove the debris that had blocked the gutter. I needed a longer ladder than what I had. I went to Jerry and Debbie to borrow theirs. The ladder was long and heavy. Jerry and Debbie looked at ladder and looked at me and had pity on me and offered to help. They helped carry the ladder, raise it up and held it for me to climb up and remove the leaves that blocked my gutter. They even went the extra mile because I had to do the front and the back of the house. Last week, we studied about Jesus’ encounter with his disciple where he point blank asked them “But Who do you say I am?” The Holy Spirit revealed the answer to them through Peter that Jesus was “The Christ of God”. So what? Now that we know him, what do we do with this knowledge and new relationship? Follow Me If you have ever driven in Washington DC, you know that you can easily get lost looking for your way. Two months ago, I was in DC and a couple in their car who were very lost asked me for direction to get to the Washington Times Building off of New York Avenue. I knew the place and I had been there at least twice before. Confidently, I told them to follow my direction. I pointed them in the direction and off they went. Later, I had to follow the same direction to make my way to Maryland. As I drove this street which I thought will connect to NY Avenue, I did not know that it was only a one-way street joining the heavy traffic of NY Avenue to the North and away from DC into Maryland. At this realization, I felt so sorry for the couple I had given direction. This couple would be further lost because of my direction and because they followed me. Who is this Man? When we were dating, my now wife, U.D. thought she knew me enough to say yes to me for a proposed marriage. I was nice and thoughtful and put on my best behavior. I could do this because most of our dating was through letter writing and international phone calls. I paid enough phone bills that I should own a good portion of the A&T shares. I also thought I knew her enough and was very excited and captivated by her outside and inside beauty to propose to her for marriage. How Much Debt Do You Owe? Everybody is now in some debt as a result of our credit card culture. I call it the “plastic life”. That little plastic has ruined many lives. Statistics show that an average adult in the U.S owes consumer debt of about $30,000. This is debt owed on stuff like clothes, food, movies and etc and it does not include mortgage/house debt or rent. We have become a culture gone wild and living on borrowed money. It has become a life style of pride and always trying to impress others or showing we are falsely better than others. To add to our confusion, debt settlement and consolidation companies now promise to get us out of debt without a change in life style. How can we get out of debt without a change in the life styles that caused us to get into debt in the first place? It is impossible. Confused, Depressed and Need Encouragement? Life has a way of throwing curve balls at us that we begin to doubt and question all that we believe and hold dear. We suddenly find ourselves in unforeseen circumstances that look so bleak that for the moment, there does not seem to be a way out. And some times there may not be a way out of those hard and excruciating issues of life and we are forced to endure. It could come in the form of loss of a job, death of a loved one, sickness, divorce or difficult relationships and etc. For me, it was the fifteen years of barrenness and waiting to have a child we so desperately desired.
