"Eyewitnesses of His Majesty" - Very Compelling!
Dear Saints,
We are all eyewitnesses every day. We see things and observe events in our families, neighborhood, workplaces, community, states, countries, and the world. In fact, because of technologies (streaming, live TV) we are eyewitnesses of events that are so far away from us.
Some of us were eyewitnesses via live TV when one of NASA shuttles blew up on launch.
Peter and the other disciples were eyewitnesses of Jesus, the ultimate TRUTH. As we continue our study of 2 Peter, the apostle cements the truth he has passed on to the suffering pilgrims, his audience, and us. Let’s hear Peter:
“For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” 18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.” 2 Peter 1:16-18.
Peter and the apostles lived with Jesus Christ for about three and a half years. They ate together, walked everywhere, talked, ministered, and did their daily living. Imagine being with Jesus all day.
Among the many experiences, one stood out most for Peter, and he retells it in today’s scripture. This account refers to the transfiguration of Jesus recorded in Matthew 17:1-8, Mark 9:1-9, and Luke 9:28-38. It was frightening to hear the voice of God the Father affirm Jesus, God the Son. “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Peter is saying, I (we) are not making it up nor telling fables. Jesus is as real as can be, and God Himself said so. Why is this so important to Peter’s audience? People were already preaching a different Jesus, who is not the Son of God, did not come in the flesh as a human, and did not die on the cross. If that be the case, then we have no Savior for sins and are forever doomed to hell, separated from the living God.
Oh, friends, this Gospel of Jesus was challenged in the past and is still being contested and mocked worldwide. In a court of law, eyewitnesses decide the outcome of a case. The case for Christ is resounding and tight-proved. Do not let any talk you out of it. Even today, Jesus Christ is a historical person validated by Roman and Jewish history.
We are witnesses of Jesus. You ask how? Listen to Jesus. “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8.
You received the Holy Spirit when you confessed your sins, repented, and asked Jesus to forgive you. You and I are, therefore, witnesses.
I had a personal encounter with Jesus on December 26, 1976; I knew for sure that Jesus was in my heart and that I was born again by the Holy Spirit, who forever lives in me. How about you?
Now, let us go and be the witnesses we are. A witness testifies to the reality they know and has seen. Today and forever, pray for someone and tell how God transformed you from darkness into His marvelous light by believing and trusting Jesus Christ. May “His Divine power” and grace enable us to do so. Amen.
